The USA ESTA Visa Guide for San Francisco

San Francisco by night

San Francisco by night

As tech companies flourished, city coffers bulged. In the late 1990s, hundreds of internet start-ups set up shop in Silicon Valley. The bubble burst in 2000, leaving nearly half of those offices vacant. But San Franciscans held their ground. In 2004 housing prices remained at an all-time high and the economy was rebounding. Ups and downs are as much a part of the urban fabric as those outlandish hills. Like tourists thronging its cable cars, San Franciscans just hang on and enjoy the ride.

Just as San Francisco has microclimates – patches of sun and fog – it also has what could be called microcultures. Each neighborhood has its own character, a unique quality that is generated, not surprisingly, by the people who live there. So spend some time strolling the city streets and be transported into these fascinating self-sustaining worlds.

Business Accommodations in San Francisco

San Francisco is a treasure trove for aficionados of small, European-style “boutique” hotels whose rates range from moderate to pricey. But there is something for everyone here. The high price of real estate coupled with tremendous demand makes for what can be astronomical room rates. San Francisco proper is small, and thus space is limited. You can often pay substantially less for more space by staying in Oakland and taking BART into the city. An alternative to hotels is Airbnb, on which locals rent out private rooms and entire apartments.

The Huntington Hotel (4 Stars)

Rebranded after a 15 million dollar renovation in 2014, this elegant 1924 classic overlooks the charming Huntington Park and Grace Cathedral on the California Street cable-car line. It entered the 21st-century with an updated Asian-inspired lobby and upgraded bathrooms in the already oversized guest rooms. Other amenities include the Nob Hill Spa and The Big Four Restaurant—named for the railroad barons. They built their mansions, and then hotels, on this hill— which sits just off the lobby.

Inn at The Presidio (3 Stars)

The Presidio opened its doors in 1903 as officer’s quarters and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. This three-story Georgian-Revival style brick building is the first public hotel to open in The Presidio. It features an inviting front porch, breakfast dining hall and an outdoor deck with a fire-pit. View rooms face the verdant park landscape, while many of the suites and bay rooms on the top floor have enchanting views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Fairmont (4 Stars)

This famous grand hotel, which underwent a 21 million dollar renovation in 2014, has a rich history that includes the 1906 earthquake and creation of the United Nations in 1945. Handsomely appointed rooms are in the original main building and in a 1961 tower that offers extensive views across tip city. Don’t miss happy hour at the exotic Tonga Room and Bar with its thatched umbrellas and simulated rainstorms.

Your ESTA application and the Top-Rated Restaurants in SF

San Francisco’s restaurant culture thrives on residents’ fascination with the experience of dining out. Chefs of successful eateries are feted as celebrities and followed religiously on social media. In keeping with this heightened sense of importance, restaurateurs pay close attention to style and design. They carefully choreograph interiors, table settings, wait staff attire and music to complement the cuisine and maximize its camera-readiness. Choosing a restaurant in San Francisco can be overwhelming. So great is the variety of eateries here, so outstanding is their quality that dining has become a recreation in itself.

Farallon (Top Level)

Whimsical blown-glass jellyfish chandeliers float over tables, and octopus stools nestle beside kelp columns. These and other colorful undersea fantasies complement chef Mark Franz’s seafood menu here. Wash down entrées—grilled Georges Bank diver scallops with bacon-braised chicories. Another specialty is New Zealand Tai snapper with lobster consommé and gnocchi – with a selection from the extensive wine list.

New American (Top Level)

Belle Epoque accents – mosaic tile, steel girders, a pressed tin ceiling – have transformed the 1889 Audiffred Building. Its windows beautifully frame the Bay Bridge. Chef Nancy Oakes melds American regional flavors with classic French techniques. Favorites include California sea bass a La plancha, and wood-oven-roasted Iamb sirloin with artichokes, asparagus, and housemade mint jelly. Dessert offerings range from a chocolate angel pie to a sweet carrot cake with walnut crunch ice cream.

Chez Panisse (Mid Level)

California cuisine was born in 1971 in this casual dining room, under the watchful eye of culinary doyenne Alice Waters. It’s well worth the drive over to Berkeley to sample the nightly changing four-course prix-fixe menus. Menus might include local halibut carpaccio with fava bean and Meyer lemon salsa, braised guinea hen with crispy pancetta and glazed onions, as well as leg of Iamb roasted in the fireplace. However, upstairs the Chez Panisse Café serves more straightforward fare for lunch and dinner.
